Friends of Winchester Hospital, the official auxiliary, was founded in 1950 to provide community support and volunteer service for the hospital. Today, more than 400 men and women from the many communities the hospital serves continue this caring tradition. These volunteers give over 49,000 hours per year. Among the services which the Friends provide are Admitting, Ambulatory Care, Central Service, Clerical, Coffee Cart, Coffee Shop, Concierge, Day Surgery, Emergency Department, Evening Messenger, Flower Service, Gift Shop, Information Desk, Messenger Service, Pharmacy, and X-ray Transport.
Although membership in the Friends is not a requirement for volunteer work, more than 235 volunteers are members. The Friends maintain two boards, an Executive Board and a Service Board. These boards oversee the operations of the Volunteers.
The purpose of our organization is to keep the community informed about the hospital and to provide services within the hospital. The Friends also keep track of the hours given by all volunteers, give awards and pins for those hours, provide on-going education regarding healthcare, and produce the "Volunteers in Print" newsletter. Each Christmas the Friends give roses to all the patients in the hospital at Christmas.
The Friends of Winchester Hospital is a non-profit organization. It holds two fundraising events each year, the proceeds of which go directly to the Hospital. The moneys earned by these fund-raisers during the 1996-97 year will be directed to a Read-to-Me Program, whereby a book will be given to each new baby born in Winchester Hospital. Volunteers will also go into the childbirth classes to emphasize the importance of reading to infants even from the first day they are brought home. The book which was chosen is Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McClosky.
Each year the Friends hold two general membership meetings, one in the Fall and one in the Spring. At these meetings speakers up-date the membership on various aspects of healthcare.
